The Rental Housing Crisis

Access to Rental Housing in Türkiye: Causes, Social Processes and Public Policy Recommendations

The project “Access to Rental Housing in Türkiye: Causes, Social Processes and Public Policy Recommendations”, supported by TÜBİTAK, examines the structural causes of Türkiye’s deepening rental housing crisis, its social consequences, and the role of existing public policies in it. The research covers Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir and combines surveys of tenant households, focus group discussions, expert interviews and the analysis of policy documents. The project looks at how housing’s growing role as an investment and financial asset affects access to rental housing, housing security and social inequalities. One of the main objectives of the research is to use its empirical findings to develop public policy recommendations, grounded in social justice, that improve access to housing and security of tenure.
